Leadership Recognition

“Leadership in the OCDSB is the demonstration of personal initiative to achieve a positive outcome.”

Students

The students of Charles H. Hulse Public School are involved in a number of leadership activities in the school and community. As responsible, caring global citizens, our students work diligently towards making the world a better place for all. Leadership opportunities and activities for students include:

Student Council: The student council plays an important role in our school. They plan school spirit events, raise money for various causes and provide incredible assistance with preparation and assistance with our Family Literacy evenings. This year, our council will have an active role in the implementation of our School Improvement Plan.

Another initiative for our grade 6 students is the Peer Helpers Program. These students are trained to assist our younger students with challenges that they face during recess.

Each month, three students from each class are acknowledged for exemplifying one of the Habits from our Hulse Habits Program. The monthly assemblies serve as opportunities to acknowledge students who participate in activities that enhance the school community such as sports teams and glee club.

Teachers regularly send students to the office to share their great work with the Principal and Vice Principal whether it be an academic, social or behavioral accomplishment

Lunch Monitors: A team of grade 6 students help our younger students during lunch. They are available to open containers and assist the students with any challenges they are having.

During our formal School Leaving Ceremony, students in grades four, five and six are acknowledged for achievement in many areas with a medal or small plaque.

Staff

The staff at Charles H. Hulse Public School is a caring, dedicated group of professionals. Our staff members have a wealth of professional qualifications including Bachelors and Masters degrees in the Arts and Sciences, as well as additional qualifications in Reading and Mathematics, Special Education, English-as-a-Second Language, Visual Arts, Dance/Drama, Physical Education and Computers in Education.

Upon the return from professional development, staff are encouraged to take a leadership role in presenting an activity or sharing their learning. This shared leadership allows us to see each other as co learners.

The beginning of every staff meeting is a time set aside for staff to “Celebrate, Acknowledge and Brag- CAB”. During this protected time, staff have an opportunity to share what they or their colleagues have been doing to enhance our school community. Always highlighted are the significant contributions made by our EA’s, ECE’s, office and custodial staff. Weekly memos via email also serve as a vehicle to be sure that contributions by all staff can be acknowledged in a timely manner.

Our school also recognizes staff leadership through mentoring, team leader roles, school newsletters and announcements, assemblies, performance appraisals, and our Administrative Team’s report to School Council. We value the contributions of our staff to our school and the community. We take the time to come together to celebrate their special achievements.

More importantly, on a daily basis, time is made to connect with individuals and express to them in a specific and meaningful way that they are appreciated for the myriad of things that they do.

Parents/Guardians/Volunteers

Our dedicated volunteers contribute support for the benefit of students in the school. These volunteers contribute by: reading to and with students on a regular basis; working one-on-one with students in literacy and numeracy activities; and, assisting staff with class and/or school activities such as the milk program, field trips and activity days. Our dedicated school council meets monthly and works to support these school-wide initiatives and activities and helps to grow the capacity of our community.

In addition, our school continues to develop partnerships with community organizations such as Ottawa Volunteers in Education in the coordination of volunteers for one-to-one reading and various other support programs for our students.

As invaluable partners, we thank our parents, guardians and community volunteers on an on-going basis, and look for opportunities to acknowledge them such as through school newsletters, announcements, school assemblies, our Administrative Team’s report to school council, and our annual volunteer appreciation event.

Community

We recognize our community partners through our school announcements, school newsletters, the principal’s report to school council, thank you cards and phone calls. We also invite them to school events and assemblies. We acknowledge our community partners as we forge relationships with them throughout the school year.
